Caroline Michelle Textile Art is a community for textile enthusiasts of all levels to come together and learn about Freemotion Embroidery. As a dedicated textile artist and instructor, I have a passion for helping students develop their talents and skills while at the same time expressing their creativity. When attending one of my workshops, you’ll learn a range of techniques to create stunning embroidered patterns and designs, while also connecting with fellow textiles enthusiasts. This workshop is a great opportunity to learn the art of freemotion embroidery, at a beginner’s level. You will enjoy the freedom of drawing with your machine to create your own artwork. This in-depth beginner’s class covers everything you need to know to learn this addictive technique, from setting up your machine and what equipment you will need, to top tips and handy advice to get the most out of this wonderfully creative technique. Throughout the day you will be taught the skills and techniques required, by producing several small samples, growing in confidence as you become more skilled at the technique. Ending the day by producing a lovely piece of freemotion artwork using the raw edge applique technique.

With full templates, the process of creating your artwork is broken down into easy step by step instructions throughout the day. This advanced 3-day workshop builds on an array of freemotion skills by combining them into a wonderful Nature Inspired 3-dimensional lampshade design. It’s a perfect workshop for those who already have a solid understanding of freemotion embroidery and wish to advance their skills even further.
With light at the centre of this workshop we will look at how even the tiniest of fabric scraps can come together to make new artwork. From design concept to finished outcome with plenty of opportunity to style your lampshade according to your own individual taste. We will be focusing on combining fabrics and using dissolvable fabric to bring a 3-dimensional feel to your design. With expert tips, hands-on practice, and plenty of guidance taking you through design, development and creation of a stunning work of art to light up your home.

Choose from three lovely layered pictures and create your very own layered raw edge applique and freemotion masterpiece. This class is ideal for those who have completed the beginners workshop or have had a go at freemotion before. Throughout the workshop you will be guided through each individual step with clear and detailed plans to build up your picture in your chosen fabrics. Nicely presented in a special ‘frame’ you can choose to add buttons and bead embellishments and a lovely ribbon to finish off your layered picture. You will be taught all the skills needed to make the most out of this fantastic technique and leave the workshop with the knowledge and ability to continue with your own designs in the future.

09.05.26 Introduction to thread sketching with freemotion embroidery (Cornwall Workshop)
Learn the art of thread sketching with freemotion embroidery in this class aimed at beginners. Enjoy the freedom of drawing with your machine to create your own artwork. Freemotion embroidery is a hugely versatile technique and can be developed in a loose and expressive way, rich in texture and colour with a technique known as thread sketching. During this class you will be shown how to experiment with thread through a variety of simple practice exercises, including how to transfer images into textured stitch as well as using different colours to produce a beautifully textured artwork through various stages from an initial photograph to finished piece.

05.09.26 Freemotion Embroidery – Combining applique with thread sketching (Cornwall Workshop)
This workshop combines the processes of applique and freemotion embroidery with thread sketching to create a beautiful animal picture of your choice. Ideally suited to those who have had a go at freemotion embroidery before or completed a beginners workshop. Come equipped with an A4 image of your choice or choose from one of the prepared animal images such as the kingfisher in the example. You will be guided through the process of planning and converting your image into a simple plan so you can convert the image to fabric. Then carefully add stitch with a variety of coloured threads to bring texture and ‘life’ to your finished picture! Throughout the workshop you will be guided through each individual step to build up your picture out of your chosen fabrics. You will be taught all the skills needed to make the most out of this fantastic technique and leave the workshop with the knowledge and ability to continue with your own designs in the future.
